PROJECT EXAMPLE: A challenging coastal knotweed removal contract for Norfolk District Council
Project Overview
North Norfolk District Council engaged Japanese Knotweed Ltd to manage the removal of approximately 200 tonnes of soil contaminated with Japanese knotweed. This soil had slipped onto the promenade following heavy rainfall during the previous winter and was subsequently stockpiled at the base of the road by the client, ready for collection. The client supplied all necessary machinery and personnel to load the contaminated material into tipper lorries.
Scope of Work
- Waste Soil Sampling and Testing (Provisional)
- Collected and analysed a representative soil sample to classify the waste in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Watching Brief / Supervision
- Provided expert supervision throughout the waste loading process.
- Ensured that all client operatives adhered to compliance regulations and fulfilled Duty of Care obligations, including proper documentation and sign-off.
- Waste Haulage
- Transported the knotweed-contaminated soil using Environment Agency-licensed waste carriers.
- Utilised sheeted, 8-wheeled tipper lorries, each capable of carrying up to 20 tonnes.
- Final waste volumes were confirmed through re-measurement and verified using signed Duty of Care waste transfer tickets.
- Controlled Waste Disposal
- Disposed of all Japanese knotweed-contaminated soil (and any incidental vegetation) at a licensed landfill facility.
- Final tonnage was confirmed with signed weighbridge tickets.
Project Delivery
Our team supervised and coordinated the removal and transport of approximately 200 tonnes of invasive species-contaminated soil, with the client providing the necessary labour and equipment for loading. A qualified supervisor was present throughout to ensure:
- All activities complied with current legislation and industry best practices.
- Proper handling, loading, and tracking of Japanese knotweed-contaminated waste.
- Completion and sign-off of all Duty of Care documentation.
- Delivery of a Toolbox Talk to all site operatives, covering invasive species management, clean site protocols, and adherence to relevant Codes of Practice.
- Active oversight of machinery and personnel to prevent cross-contamination and accidental spread of invasive species.
The project concluded with the site left clean and free from knotweed contamination.
